SEAL THE DEAL WITH CAPTIVATING ATTRIBUTES !
If an indie-author expects to successfully market a book, the reader/buyer's decision-making steps at the point of purchase must be acknowledged. Given the vast competition, the author must excel at every facet of their book! Let's look at this from the potential buyer's perception.
For each author, it all starts with your book's COVER! While a reader shouldn't judge a book by its cover, you must woo and enthrall a prospective buyer's attention with your book's wrap! When potential readers scan websites, book shelves, promotions, and magazines for new books, your cover better stick out and draw their attention like a two-ton magnet attracting a needle! Don't skimp on the cover! While you might be thrilled with artwork of your own creation, it's the buyer's perception that counts! It must look professional and amazingly enticing next to all the competition!
After your breathtaking cover comes the HOOK within the FIRST paragraph and page of YOUR STORY. Readers, librarians, agents, publishers, and movie producers are extremely busy and have so many competitive choices. If you don't HOOK them IMMEDIATELY, they will drop your book and move on! The hook within your story shouldn't be like a drawn out joke where the punchline finally hits you like a bolt. Your chances to grab an interested party's attention improve significantly if lightning strikes within the first few sentences — the earlier, the better!
Once a potential buyer is sold on the initial attributes of your book, the CONTENT throughout the pages must be professional, very readable, and captivating when the reader takes a quick glimpse inside to preview a few chapters to seal the deal. That includes the story-line, character development, sentence structure, and the appearance of the text and layout. Remember the HOOK I mentioned for the first paragraph of your book? Include a hook at the end of each chapter as well! Keep the reader so intrigued that they are "compelled" to turn the page after the end of the current chapter to see what happens next! Also, never scrimp on effective editing! Now that you've brought the prospective buyer down the trail to this point, don't turn them off with poor writing! Strive for glowing praise from readers claiming your "exciting story" is a "great read," and they "couldn't put the book down!"
For an example of these attributes, take a look at the cover and "Look inside" feature of my sequel, The New World: Blue Moon Generation, on Amazon!
