SHOCK & AWE

Don't let your readers rest on their laurels, especially in mysteries or action-packed adventures and science fiction. Besides the on-going suspense typical of such tales, occasionally shock them with unanticipated twists and turns.

This approach is more impactful if you include one or more subtle omens of what's to come, but not enough to allow the reader to figure out on their own what's about to flip them upside down.

Smack the reader with the unexpected turn of events when they least expect it.  Strive for that OMG gasp! You want to leave them questioning why they didn't figure it out with the clues you dropped along the way.

If you're real effective, your followers will seek and anticipate such shock and awe to thrill them in each of your new releases. Don't disappoint them.

Become more subtle with your hints and more cunning when you unleash each surprise. Such tease and fulfillment will help keep them coming back for more.
